Baltimore tunnel filled with water after valve accidentally opened (NCD)

BALTIMORE — Some Maryland drivers were slightly delayed while others suffered their worst driving nightmare as water began to fill the Harbor Tunnel during rush hour traffic Friday.

The inadvertent flooding was caused by a crew testing equipment and accidentally opened a water valve, WBFF reported. Traffic was held from 9:55 a.m. to 10:29 a.m. while the valve was closed and water pumped down.

“We immediately closed the valve, pumps cleared the water right out, and we’re taking steps to ensure this doesn’t happen again during the testing,” said John Sales, a spokesperson with the Maryland Transportation Authority. “There is no safety issue nor malfunction.”

State Sen. Bill Ferguson said the tunnel was going to be closed over the weekend for repairs.
