The opening sequences of the 80s classic Back to the Future are memorable for many reasons; the mega speaker “Doc” had in his garage lab, that Marty McFly blew after one strum of his mini guitar, know as the “Chiquita,” and of course Marty’s slick skateboarding through Hill Valley.
But probably the most memorable aspect of those opening scenes has to be the “Power of Love,” by Huey Lewis and the News, booming through those Dolby speakers in the movie theater.
In a 2012 interview with A.V. Club, Huey Lewis revealed how he was approached by the movie’s producer Steven Spielberg and director Robert Zemeckis, about writing a song for the film. They told him, “'We just wrote this film. Marty McFly is the lead character. His favorite band would be Huey Lewis and the News. How’d you like to write a song for the film?" The rest, as they say is history, with the song appearing in all three Back to the Future films.
The song became the band’s first number one song and helped launch them into a higher trajectory of stardom and success. You can read more here about how “The Power of Love” became the song of the summer in 1985.
