Country music or 80s rock? You decide.

We are celebrating the Country Concert in Ft. Loramie this weekend. No matter what kind of music you like, the show is one of the biggest summer events in the state.

When I was driving to work this morning, I thought about all the wonderful 80′s rock songs that sound “country.” I am of the opinion that if these songs were released today, they would be considered country. So here are the top 5 “80′s rock” songs that would be country if released today. Any to add to the list? Comment below.

1) “Leather and Lace” by Stevie Nicks and Don Henley: Imagine if you will that you are hearing this song for the first time. No doubt it’s really pure country. In fact, Nicks wrote the song for country legends Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter but because of their pending divorce the song was not included in Jessi’s album. So, Nicks released the song that hit #6 for three weeks in January of 1982. The song was a ‘no show’ on the country charts, but if it was released today, it would be a country monster. (Bonus: listen to “After the glitter fades” from Nicks and hear a song that is traditional county.)

2) “The Way it Is” by Bruce Hornsby: The group won Grammy for Best New Artist and had a fresh new sound. Listening to it now, you can hear harmonica (which was performed by Huey Lewis.) The song is gritty, earthy, acoustic and very “country.” The song even had an accordion, mandolin and violin featured. Listen and tell me, if released today - wouldn’t this song be a country music smash?

3) “Pink Houses” by John Mellencamp: This one is obvious. Back in the 80′s he was considered “heartland rock” but by today’s standards this is a #1 country hit. A song that was recorded in a farmhouse in Brownstown, Indiana is all about the Midwest of America. Great song and makes our list.

4) “Southern Cross” by Crosby, Stills and Nash: This song is one of my personal favorites. How can you help but smile and think about summer when hearing the song? Crosby, Stills and Nash were famous for their 60′s rock and roll vibe, but in my opinion, this song is pure country. (Bonus: listen to “Wasted on the Way,” another incredible song.)

5) “Rough Boy” by ZZ Top: This is a deeper cut, but one of the best ballads from ZZ top. The vocals, instrumentation sound a lot like modern country. No doubt released today the Texas group would be a top country hit.

All of these are awesome records!
